What does it mean if the tachometer specs says "WILL WORK ON 4, 6, or 8 CYLINDER ENGINES MUST HAVE A DISTRIBUTOR TO USE THESE TACHOMETERS
CAN BE USED WITH HEI, MSD, etc. DISTRIBUTOR IGNITIONS"?
If anyone have got a working tachometer, can you please send a link. I just bought a tachometer and it is either faulty or not supported by revburner :(

Hello.
Sorry I don't know what a DISTRIBUTOR or HEI, MDS... are.
Do you have a link to the product page so I can have a llok?

does a connection like that generate the same kind of signal that the revburner does? i've seen that type of schematic more often than "hook to ECU" ones, or is "The Distributor" an ECU lol?
I think I've also seen tachometer install instructions saying hook to coil OR ECU. Just like to pin down if there's any type of criteria I should take into account when buying rev meters or if all of them works as long as they are 4,6 or 8 cylinder and not diesel ones. well, and that they don't rev higher than 17k, 12k or 8k respectively

Hello.
In general almost any tachometer is compatible with the rev burner. I don't know if yours is diffent. As you say most of the time the instructions just say "connect to the coil or to the ECU" and that is enough. your instructions instead specify that a distributor is required and I don't know why, sorry.
If you can still return it, I would try to get a different model. In the past I bought some cheap models from Ebay and they worked well.
Type-R rev counter are cheap and I know they have worked well for many people. like this one:

many of the cheap rev counters available on Ebay are similar to that one
