RPM tacho just connects with rev burner correct?

the tacho and the speedo connect to 2 rev burners....at the moment the dials in the centre of the dash only light up and are not functioning yet..

Hello Smudge.
Every dashboard is a different story because the connections are different. It might be possible some models not even work, but I am not aware of any at the moment.

When asked what model of dashboard to use, I always suggest the Alfa 156, like the one you see in this thread, because it looks good, easy to connect and you can ask me or nescafe37 the details of the connections.

I'm using a Honda CRX Del Sol cluster for my setup.

Both gauges work, and most importantly they go up to 9000 RPM (Actually 9500), and 240Kp/h for the tachometer and the speedometer respectively.

I have noticed the RevBurners get somewhat hot during use, though that's probably because the entire cluster draws power from them.
It's also an older dash, so it has a mechanical odometer. The motor for this could be a bit power hungry for the regulators.

Christiano, I'm thinking of connecting the gauges to an external power supply so the RevBurners only provide signal. Will this be safe if I use an unregulated supply? And should I use a common ground?

Also, I'd like to suggest a forum topic (Sticky?) where people can post compatible or incompatible clusters/gauges, so they don't have to throw away money on incompatible ones.

For example, I purchased a Toyota Celica T18 cluster, which turns out to have a mechanical speedo. The tach does work however.

Hello.
The rev burner's heat dissipator gets hot because a full dashboard requires a lot more power than a simple rev counter.
You can either replace the dissipator with a bigger one or use an external power supply.

If you want to use an external power supply, at the bottom of this page:

http://www.symprojects.com/faq/power-supplies/

you will find how to connect everything together.

The power supply should be regulated at 12V, 3A should be ok.

something like this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Jewel-JS-12030-2E-12V-3A-AC-DC-power-adapter-equiv-/260686553835?pt=Laptop_Adapters_Chargers&hash=item3cb22122eb

I was already thinking about a page to share information on which dashboards work well with the rev burner. I will do it soon. I have the dashboard from a Ford Mondeo and I will describe how to make the connections.

Thanks
Cristiano

Hi.
nescafe37 will confirm but I think those clocks work fine with the small power supplies available on the website.
You need two, one for each rev burner.

Hi all,

Let me introduce myself, I'm bonjourno38, I'm French and I don't speak English very well. I discovered what could be done a few years ago with the beta innovations products and I came across your products that seem very interesting for me. I already have an SLI-PRO from Leobodnar, but I'm interesting by a real dashboard for going with that.
I'm a fan of Alfa Roméo too, and I'm wan't to ask some questions before buy anything.

To begin, I'm wan't to get a dashboard from GTV 2.0TB, and I would like to know if you think it would be compatible with the revburner ?
-I would also like to know where I could get the wiring diagrams of these dashboard ?
-Are the power supplies sold on site will suffice to operate the dashboard and Revburner ?
-Is what I could for example run some lights on the dashboard as additional diodes for SLI ?
-Could you help me make the connections properly?

I thanks you for your great work and thank you in advance for any help you can give me.

Bye.

Hi,

To begin, thanks for your very fast answer. But I have bad news for you, your answers have led to further questions from me ;D.
I have seen the wiring diagrams of a power supply. But I don't Understand something...

-How can I plug the + or - of the power supply to the Revburners ???!!!!
Because the power supply is sell with an adaptor 2.1mm or 5.5mm. I want you explain that to me, because I'm not a professional in electronics.

-If I wan't to find the good connections on the back of the Dashboard, how can I do ? I should test with a multimeter?

I hope that my English isn't too bad.

Thanks a lot for the creation of Revburners !!!! And for the help you give to me.

Bye.

Hello.
Usually you would connect the power supply to the black connector (DC in the picture) near the usb socket.

But because the power requirements for a dashboard often exceed the Rev Burner's capabilities, the power supply must be connected like in the picture.

In the picture the positive and negative wires from the power supply are connected to the orange screw terminal on the Rev Burner. It is visible in this picture on the right hand side of the board:

http://www.symprojects.com/shop/images/53

Regard finding the connection of the dashboard, I suggest to proceed in this way: first take the 12V and ground wires from the power supply and experiment with the dashboard until it turns on (the fuel gauge will move, some lights will switch on). if you don't have any documentation or manuals the only options is to try avery single connectors until something happens.

Next is the RPM signal from the rev burner. In the Rev Burner configuration screen in SimDash generate a test rpm signal and test every connector on the dashboard until you find the one which make the tachometer move. If it doesn't work try and move the "12V-5V" jumper on the rev burner to the "12V" position. This generates a "stronger" signal for the dashboard.

To the same for the speed signal, using the second rev burner.

I know it is not very scientific but if you have no information about your dashboard there isn't anything else you can do.

Cheers
Cristiano

Hello,

Thanks for your answers, but I have some other questions for you today:

-How can I find the wires + and - of the power supply if there is a 2.1mm or 5.5mm plug ? I should cut the wire before that plug ?
-If I test on all the single connectors, I will not break the dashboard ?
-Can you give me photos of your different installations (particulary the revburners photos and the 156 dashboard) ?

Thanks for your fast answers...  Soon I'll be able to order my 2 revburners With your help fast.

Bye.

Cordially, Florian.

I'd like to offer a few potential answers.

You can find the polarity(+ and -) by using a multimeter.
Set it to volts, stick one test lead inside the plug, and hold the other to the body. If the it indicates a negative voltage, you have the polarity wrong(So switch the red and black leads around).

Most power supplies also have this symbol on the label(without the text):
If yours doesn't, use a multimeter to be sure.

Of course, if you don't have a female connector for the 2.1/5.5mm plug to fit into, cutting it off and connecting the wires directly will work just fine. Provided you're not planning to use the power supply for something else.
Otherwise, if you have a local electronics shop, you could ask them for a 2.1/5.5mm socket. 2.1mm is a common connector, so they'd probably have it in stock.

If you'd like to find out the dashboard connections, try this service manual (http://www.alfaowner.com/Forum/3546814-post12.html). I haven't checked because it's a large file, but chances are the connections/pinout are listed in there.

Hello,

I have others questions for you:

-If I use an external 12V, 3A power supply for supply the Dashboard, Should I supply the revburners with other 500mA power supplies via their DC outputs ?
-A power supply 3A/12V does she not give too power for a dahsboard? That is will not to break him ?

Thanks for answers.

Great job nescafe looks the nuts. By the way have you seen the wheel adaptor offered by chillicoke? It allows you to fit standard momo wheels on a G25/27. I got one before my rev burners because I prefer the feel of a full size wheel but the other advantage is a full size wheel won't cover your dials... Just wondered if you'd seen it. You don't need to make any perminant changes so you can always switch back if you don't like it. He also does larger paddle shifters if you want these to go with your larger wheel. Google chillicoke and it should come up.

Hello.
Don't connect another power supply to the DC connector of the rev burner. Only use the 12V 3A power supply, connected as indicated in the picture I linked previously

The current rating of the power supply is the maximum current it is able to provide to the dashboard. But the dashboard will only use the amount it needs. So you could use a 12V 3000000A power supply with no problems,  apart from cost.

Cheers

Title: Re: My cockpit build Log(WIP)
Post by: chris p duck on April 19, 2011, 02:00:37 pm
Hey matey. I did mine by taking the measurements from my real car. Get your seat where you're happiest with it then take measurements for all the important things (middle of each of the pedal faces, centre of steering wheel, top of gear stick, back middle of seat etc)

Pick one point (I picked the floor directly under the brake pedal, but it can be anything) then take x, y and z differences for each item. eg the steering wheel might be 300mm forward, 10mm to the left and 700mm up from this point.

As Nescafe said build in as much adjustment as you can and you won't go far wrong.

I'm planning on it being quite a complete build, incorporating working dash lights (if possible), for example the handbrake light etc.

I am sure the 306 is a cable driven speedo mate so that wont work..i might be mistaken but im sure the cable so you better check first...The extra switches i bought from ebay and they are only used to turn my wheel on/off,,Turn the simdisplay on/off and turn my GIMAX on/off...And the big red hazard warning switch you see in my pictures is connected to my dashboard lights..Although i also have Leo Bodnar board to connect extra buttons and switches but i have not got around to fitting it yet

Hmmm, will have to look into it as think the later phases might not be cable driven.

Is this the board you mention? http://www.leobodnar.com/products/SLI-M/

I would start my own build thread, but I'm not going to be building anything for a few months!  :P

Hello,

Thanks for that list Nescafe, it will be more easier for me to do the good plugs.
Can you just say the number of trips you used especially for the +12 V and earth.
What type of power supply have you used ?

Thanks a lot. Bye.

nice build there mate , just a quick question for you, is it possible to just use an alfa156 speedo on its own with a revburner?

or do the tachos requier that you have the matchin rev tach for it to work?,

my thinkin is i already have a rev burner and a nice aftermarket rev tacho, so im wanting a top speed display, but im not likin the  digital ones to b e honest,

i can get my hands on just an alfa 156 speedo with no rev clock pritty cheap so i was going to go down this route, i just wanted to know if its visable or not?

If I remember correctly the rev counter and speedometer of the Alfa 156 are two separate units.
