I have since found out a bit about VAN bus, which is very similar to CAN bus. Without the rest of the car to go with the Instrument Cluster its going to be near impossible to work out what the messages are supposed to be on this bus. I have cross posted to the Alfa owners group in the hopes someone there can help us out.

Also with some digging I found the Alfa 147 Instrument cluster is driven by a Fujitsu MCU MB90590G and the Speedometer data is held in the 93C86 EPROM chip attached to it.
