SimDash DLC-247 configuration -- software feature suggestion
« on: November 04, 2012, 03:10:47 am »
First of all, let me say how happy I am with the DLC-247, SimDash, and SymProjects in general.

When I was setting up my two DLCs, there was one feature I wish SimDash had...

For each of the 24 displays, there is a "Test" button which will fully turn on the appropriate display, to help identify / confirm what you have wired up.  For example, you tell SimDash that a particular display should show the second digit of vehicle speed in MPH, and you can click the test button to make sure that middle digit of your cool blue thee-digit display lights up with a big "8.".

One of the options is to treat a display as eight separate LEDs (labeled A - G and then DP, after the standard labeling for a 7-segment display with a decimal point).  That way you can connect and control up to eight LEDs for whatever purpose you like.  In a secondary dialog you specify the criteria for the LED to turn on, and optionally blink.  For example, you might set an LED to come on when a yellow flag occurs, another for a shift light, or you might use a couple of displays as LED controllers for a 15-segment temperature bar.  Wire it up correctly and you're good to go!  Great stuff.

However, the one thing that is missing is a "Test" button for an individual LED in this scenario.  It would be great to be able to click a little button next to the LED you just tied to a yellow flag condition, and see the yellow LED you hooked up come on to confirm all is well.  Or go down your list to light up your LED bar and make sure you've got the percentages in the right place.

If anyone else thinks this is a good idea, feel free to chime in.  I've long since built my dash but have always thought this would be very helpful, especially if I ever decide to make any changes.   :)

Thank you for your suggestion.
I wii add this feature to the next version of SimDash, I am sure it will be helpful for other people too.

Cristiano, thanks for considering, let alone actually implementing this suggestion!
