which speedos and tachos to use with rev burner
« on: September 07, 2012, 11:18:21 pm »
Was looking at a particular set of porsche clocks to use with my setup, problem is the clocks run on canbus so basicly i will be using the casing for cosmetic looks, i want to mod a rev counter and speedo into them that will work with rev burner so my question is......
Which type of clocks will work with it?
presume any type of rev counter that has the pickup that would normally connect to the cars coil will work?
not too sure about the type of speedo that will work (must be a single unit type for modding).
any ideas which may be of use?
thanks in advance

If I was you I would buy one of those generic rev counter available on ebay, like this one for example:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rev-Counter-4-6-8-cyl-Shift-Light-Retro-Chrome-Effect-/180461312972?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2a04551bcc

it's cheaper than yours and will definitely work because I have one.

I'm having a problem finding a cheap digital speed dial. Can I use a tachometer as a speedo if I change the graphics from revs to mph..?

Yes you can.
analog speedometer are not as widely available as rev counters, and those available are expensive.

I am planning to test these ones:

I eventually found a Kawasaki ninja Tachometer and an old Jaguar XJ6 SIII speedometer on the internet from a breakers/junk yard in the UK. See picture here:

... and video of the working dials in a technical electric assembly here in this post here: http://hutchinsonsimulators.wordpress.com/2013/04/10/technical-assemby-for-instrument-panel-finished-tested/

I picked these because i saw that they worked for an guy named Diego de Pablos on youTube. However, The Jaguar XJ6 SIII is very old - about three decade old in fact - so I'm expecting it to break pretty soon. When this happens I'll definitely be buying a cheap speedo that you recommend so I'm looking forward to your tests so i can know which ones are good to buy :)

I have ordered one of those speedometers.
You can ask me in 2-3 weeks, after I have received it, how it works

I used the autometer 4486 a bit pricy but it works well, it also keeps track of how many miles I have driven     3 3/8 diameter

I got it here

I made my own gauges eventually from the dissected car parts I collected. I have posted a walk through in this topic post here if it is of interest to you weedkiller: http://www.symprojects.com/forum/index.php?topic=796.0

BTW Cristiano, did you ever write up a review for the two rev counters that you were testing. I'd be interested to hear what you thought of them. I presume that one day the worlds stock of 1996 kawasaki linear motors will run out then I'll need to find a different motor to run the needles. :)

Those speedometers are good and I have ordered some that I will receive at the end of the month.
I have also ordered the matching rev counter. Overall quality is good and prices very reasonable.
