A list of questions about making my dash
« on: August 26, 2013, 06:26:57 pm »
Ok, i have a number of questions that i need a little help on. They only concern iRacing. I only want to build my dash 2-3 times and no more! LOL. This is the second one I'm working on. Most of my questions are yes or no answers.

1, Does someone make an illuminated momentary switches that you know of and can i use them with DLC247? I want a button for team speak mute and mic mute and i want some sort of signal that they are engaged. Unless there is another type of switch i can use that is lighted or another solution.

2, Do you think its ok to make the holes for the SPI-D and GI-Max 1mm bigger then what the specs say? Is there an accurate dimension for the SPI-D. The picture with the measurements on it are the measurements for the board and not the display. I would like a little room around the display and still have room for mounting holes.

3, Can i solder the wires right to my 6 digit displays and to the DLC-247 for a better connection? Is it advisable? Those push wires come lose when i monkey with my Dash.

4. In the Data page for the DLC247, In the iRacing column, It shows an "Ok" for throttle, break, and clutch. What is that for? Pressure data? i want lights showing me break pedal pressure. A series of 13 to be exact. Can i show throttle, Break, and clutch pressure in a series of lights?

5, does it matter if i use stranded or solid wire for my connections?

6, where do i get wire in more color variations other the blue green red yellow and black?

7, Does the DLC247 do track conditions?

Thanks! Darren

Hi Darren,
Those are all excellent question .
I can only try answering question number 1 for you as I don't have DLC247. the rest (2-7) I am not too sure. what I am certain is this.

1. if the dlc247 have the option for mic mute led (like the caution flag led etc) then YES.
Otherwise, even if you can use the momentary button with LED, there is no way of triggering it to stays on or off like you would a caution light. (I don't have DLC247 so I don't know if the tab, I'll check again tonight and get back to you )

I know it's not much bud, I'll play around the software tonight and hopefully can have better answer
regards,
Marcus

Hello.
I will try answering some questions:

1) I investigated the possibility to have illuminated switches but the main problem I found was that the majority of them take 12V for the light and that doesn't work well with the JC32 and JC24 that only handle 5V. Also the DLC-247 doesn't give any information on the state of the speak and mic mute.

2) don't have exact dimensions of the SPI-D display ready but I can measure it if you want

3) I wouldn't solder the wires directly to the display and board. I would use these sockets:

http://www.rapidonline.com/Cables-Connectors/BKL-Electronic-Pin-Header-2-54mm-Pitch-3A-Gold-plated-521035

that plug into the display and DLC-247 and you can solder wires on the back

4) those values are pedal position, you can use LEDs to display them.

5) you can use stranded or solid core wires

6) http://www.symprojects.com/shop/20-pin-dual-female-splittable-jumper-wire-300mm/

7) what is track conditions exactly?

Regards
Cristiano

This is why i bought hundreds of dollars of your products and am in the process of ordering hundreds more! Thanks for the answers!!!

1, Ok, i'll think of something. I'm going to look into overlays for team speak. That should give me an icon when muted i think. The light would be cooler!!

2, I have one and i will measure it. I found my calipers!!!! My other boards are at a tough spot to measure the mounting holes. Are there any docs or drilling templates for the boards i have. DLC247, Pro Gauge, Pro shift, RevBurner, GI Max. My goal is to build my dash first and then have a quick change over. The boards will be mounted in different locations. It would be nice to have all the holes drilled for the boards by the laser cutter.

3, That is just what i wanted!!!!

4, Thats good news! so i assume that in the software i have to let it know how many LEDs i am using? Like i said, i have 13 going across the front of my dash. Under full break, they will all be illuminated.

5, OK

6, Opps!

Thanks for taking the time and i know im going to have more questions as i get deeper!

it's not the pressure.
it is how much the pedal is pressed. that value is between 0 and 1 and can be displayed with 13 LEDs.

#7 Track conditions...https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AuUfvT6L0AhNdHBnODZuWkRIdWhWQjRtUHBYMHN6dmc&hl=en#gid=0, lines 40-45 :)

if i can add my question: can you extract the weather data? for ex.: In Race 07: Track temp and Ambient temp? and maybe the condition of the track Dry/Wet? Cloudy? Sunny?

Yes, i am aware of that list, but which board can run the flags? I have a pro shift now that runs the flags. Does the 247 run flags?

if the flags work with the Pro-Shift they will work with the DLC-247 too.

Ok. Thats what i wanted to know. As i progress through this complicated build that made for myself, i keep reconfiguring my design. Then, the next design requires more questions!! Its never ending. So i have another question on the 247. If i get the expansion boards, can i mount them on one end of my dash, and wire to the 247 with my own custom cable using pin headers and such? This way i have one set of cables running behind my dash instead of 2. Hopefully you understand what i tried to say. Thanks!!!

when you say expansion boards, do you mean the displays that are available for the DLC-247 on the website?

in that case, yes, you can use your own cables.

by Expantion boards i mean the DLC247 splitter boards. So what i was thinking was to mount 2 displays and connect them right to the 247 splitter board. Then, make a cable and go from the splitter board to the DLC247.
