Problem with Simscreen -> freezing the SimDash
« on: February 20, 2012, 11:33:29 am »
hi racing friends,

i have a problem with my simscreen.

i use a revburner and a simscreen. they both worked fine for countles hours, be for the last 2 weeks, the simscreen causes the simdash app to freeze. (i tried 1.2 up to 1.3.6 beta)
if i only use the revburner i don´t have a problem. with the SS connected, simdash stops working and freezes.
if i kill the app using the windows taskmanager and restart it, the simscreen sometimes comes back to life (after a couple of tries)
i tried different usb ports, a pci usb-card and different cables and my second PC. no success.
the screen shows the starting screen as usual, so it is powered.

any ideas what could cause this?

hi christiano. thanks for reading.

it happens every time i start simdash.

Do you think the problem is with a specific design? or is it not relevant? what happens if you don't load any design in the configuration screen?

At the moment I don't know what the problem is. I will have to ask you to make more tests.

regards

i have no idea what you are talking about, sorry.

christiano,
i run out of options.
i removed everything simdash related, downloaded 1.3.5 again and installed without any lcd files.
seems to make no change. most of the times i start simdash it freezes.

can be a faulty part on the simscreen pcb cause this? because without the screen connected everything is fine.

@ albymagh
simdash is not blocked in my taskmanager. i can shut it down there.
also i tried different usb ports and even pci cards.
Win7/64 here too.

I don't think it is a hardware problem with the SImScreen, I would rather think it is something wrong with SimDash.

If the SimScreen shows the splash screen when it is connected and SImDash is not started, it should mean it is ok.

What I would try to do is to refresh the firmware:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3544050/ss.rar

following the instructions for upgrading the firmware that are on the website.

Months ago a customer had a strange problem with a Pro Shift. It turned out the firmware was corrupted and had to be refreshed.

Anyway I am trying to find the cause of the issue, problem is I can't find it. I think I will have to start disabling pieces of SImDash until SimDash stops freezing so I have a starting point. but I will need your help to do that, you should test the modified versions of SimDash I will send you...

i just tried to flash with the firmware you linked above.
unfortunately the simscreen is not recognized.
no splashscreen on the screen and a red dot in simdash.
bootloader prompted no problems during installing.

i flashed back to the older firmware you gave me last summer. -> http://www.symprojects.com/forum/index.php?topic=170.msg549#msg549
i got the splashscreen back, but keep my initial problem.

Thanks.
I suppose I sent the wrong file.

I am investigating the problem. I hope to find something soon.

i have the same issue, and i remedy it by unplugging the simscreen, and plugging in again, before starting simdash.

@Cristiano.
when i cold boot my pc and before i start simdash i unplug and plug back in the simscreen usb connector, then i start simdash and the simscreen displays my screens fine. it continues to work if i restart simdash or do a reboot. if i shutdown the pc and do a cold boot i have to redo the above. i thought it might be a usb port issue, but i have tried the simscreen in every usb port on my pc and it makes no difference. although i must add it doesn't seem to be directly a simdash issue, as mine had worked fine for months and then started to play up (without changes to simdash version). i kinda wondered if it were more a .net issue.

edit. i forgot to mention that the simdash indicator for simscreen is orange for 2-3 seconds before turning green when it's not working right. when doing it as i said above the indicator shows orange for a much shorter time.

Hello;

I am having problem with simdash configure screen freezing and my simscreen not working. It only displays the flashscreen and none of the saved screens are enabled even when pushing the buttons. I have tried uninstall and reinstall to no avail. I tried running the simscreen with rfactor, iracing, and gtr2 and nothing. Tried the unplug and replug method one of the forum members mentioned and this did not work.
Any assistance would be appreciated.

just as a small update, the unplug/replug before starting simdash has stopped working. now i have to start simdash, wait for it to fail loading the simscreen, hit ctrl-alt-del, close the simdash.exe process and then unplug the simscreen usb, replug and then it works. occasionally it fails again, and i have to do it a second time.

this bug has been hard to fix because I am not completely sure where the lock happens.
however I have made some changes that worked for a person who had the same problem. these changes will be included in the next release of SimDash that I hope to make available at the end of the month.

hi cristiano, the new version of simdash seemed to fix the issue... until tonight, and all i get is a windows "usb device not recognised" message.
changing usb socket and cable makes no difference, looks like its dead. it still displays the standard simscreen display, just windows doesnt know what to do with it. all my other simprojects devices work fine.

Hello.
I would like you to do a couple of tests with the display.

Can you send me an email to contact@symprojects.com please?

thank you
