rev burner 12k rpm with V8?
« on: April 10, 2011, 11:27:54 am »
Hello,

I am considering getting the rev burner to use with the Lotus 79 in iracing. But I am a little concerned that the product description says it is only for up to 8'000 rpm with 8 cylinder engines, while the lotus has 12'000 rpm tach. Is it possible to calibrate so that let's say a 10'000 rpm sim output is displayed as 7'000 rpm in the sim. And/or should I make a separate profile and shift light point for each car I use?

Hi,

The 8 cylinder value is relevant to your real world tachometer, not the ingame representation.

The RevBurner can output RPM pulses to drive a real tachometer(or a speedometer with the right firmware). The more cylinders, the more pulses the tach needs.

Most aftermarket tachometers allow you to set the cylinder count to 4,6 or 8. Four requires the least pulse count, and should allow you to use the full range of the rev scale on your tach.

Should you choose to purchase a factory tachometer or dashboard, be sure to check all instruments are driven electronically. Older dashboard can have a mechanical speedometer, and a tach for the real world Lotus would most likely be mechanical as well.

You should also be aware of the cylinder count the tach/dashboard is built for. If you need 12K RPM you should opt for a 4 cylinder model if possible. Otherwise you will not be able to reach the end of the rev scale.

Another option is to change the gauge face of the instrument, if a tach goes up to 8000RPM stock, you could change the decal to read 12K in that position.
Most dashboards can be modified in this way, alternative gauge faces can be found on ebay or an aftermarket catalogue.

Thanks for the quick reply!

So if I understand correctly, pretty much any electronic tachometer will work. If I have a 8 cylinder tachometer that goes to 8000, I can still use it without the needle "topping out", right? The actual displayed revs are not so important.

I am planning to get an oil and water gauge to also go on the dash. I understand there is still no hardware to power these for simulation, but is it possible to get power to light them as well as the tachometer from the rev burner?

An 8 cylinder tachometer should indeed reach 8000RPM or slightly higher, I cannot guarantee this however.
Christiano will be able to provide a definitive answer, but while RPM pulses are somewhat of a "standard" across all cars that use them, some might require slightly more, or even less pulses then others to give a correct readout. As such I can't guaranty the tach you have in mind will give you the full range.

Again, Christiano will be able to speak with certainty on the subject. I can only speak from my personal experiences with the RevBurner, which are all with 4 cylinder instruments.

To power any other gauges, I recommend you read this.
If you have separate instruments rather then a dashboard you could measure out the current draw of all instruments together. If it's under 2 Amps, you could try powering them with the RevBurner.

Hello.
If you need 12.000 RPM you should get a 4 cylinders tachometer, or a tachometer that can be set to 4 cylinders.

It doesn't matter if the car you are driving in the simulator has a V8 engine. they don't need to match.
The 8.000 rpm limit is related to the real gauge.

you should be able to power the backlight of the other gauges from the Rev Burner if, as Mortos says, you stay below 2A.
Otherwise you must use the wiring he linked.

Cheers
Cristiano
